MONTREAL – Members from across Quebec’s political spectrum gathered at a downtown Montreal theatre to celebrate the life of Parti Quebecois cabinet minister Lise Payette, who died in September at the age of 87.A large group of citizens also lined up to pay their respects to the Quebec feminist, author, journalist, politician and television personality.Quebec Premier Francois Legault described Payette as an “audacious” person who always fought for women’s equality.“She showed in many ways that women were as strong as men, and I think she contributed a lot to modern Quebec,” he said outside the memorial at The Imperial theatre that was organized by the Quebec government. He said his best memory of her came before the recent Quebec election, when he promised her that he’d name a gender-balanced cabinet if elected.“Ms. Payette, I kept my word,” he said.Several of the women who attended said Payette’s fearlessness had paved the way for them as female politicians.“She was one of the first to really break this wall we have above our head in politics,” said Manon Masse, who is a spokeswoman for the left-wing party, Quebec solidaire.“She brings a powerful message, and it’s ‘women, take your place.’”Parti Quebecois legislature member Veronique Hivon, for her part, noted that Payette would likely have been proud to see that 40 per cent of those elected to the legislature in October were women. The public was also invited to pay their respects by signing a book of condolences at City Hall. One of those who showed up was Mayor Valerie Plante, who described Payette as an inspiration for herself and other women with political ambitions.“I keep saying it over and over, but in politics we need to have more models, so more women can picture themselves, can see themselves in those leadership positions,” she said. The ceremony featured speeches from former Parti Quebecois premier Pauline Marois, as well as Legault and Payette’s granddaughter, Flavie Payette-Renouf.There was no religious element to Saturday’s service in accordance with Payette’s wishes.
TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index rebounded from early losses to end in the black as technology, materials and other sectors rose, while U.S. markets also made up some lost ground. The rebound came as Apple crested the one trillion dollar valuation mark on the Nasdaq — the first company to do so — helping the technology sector in general recover somewhat from recent losses. The S&P/TSX capped information technology index saw the biggest gains of the day, up 2.44 per cent, as Wilan parent company Quarterhill Inc. surged 28.06 per cent on a $145.1-million patent infringement win against Apple, and Shopify Inc. climbed 5.89 per cent. The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index closed up 32.39 points at 16,409.16 as consumer discretionary, health-care, materials and industrials also rose.Materials stocks were up despite a slip in the copper price, while the S&P/TSX capped energy index saw some of the biggest losses of the day with a 0.56 per cent drop despite a rise in oil prices. The disconnect in oil prices compared with equities shows the market has only so much faith that crude prices can remain elevated, said Kash Pashootan, CEO and chief investment officer at First Avenue Investment Counsel Inc.“When you see the energy producers and energy stocks not behaving or participating in nearly the same way as oil prices have appreciated, that’s further evidence that the market doesn’t believe those oil prices are sustainable.”Looking at the market as a whole, Pashootan is concerned the market is starting to shrug off trade concerns after only a limited reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest threat to increase tariffs against China.“We view that as complacency, and the market turning a blind eye to factors that could cause equity markets to derail.”He said he was concerned the market is not pricing in the myriad risks that have emerged recently.“The markets right now have priced in sunshine and fresh flowers, the markets in no way are pricing in tariffs, fed tightening, or inflation.”In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 7.66 points at 25,326.16. The S&P 500 index closed up 13.86 points at 2,827.22 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 95.40 points at 7,802.69.The Canadian dollar averaged 76.84 cents US, down 0.07 of a US cent. The September crude contract closed up $1.30 at US$68.96 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was up six cents at US$2.82 per mmBTU.The December gold contract ended down $7.50 at $1,220.10 an ounce and the September copper contract was down a penny at $2.74 a pound. read more
While the Chinese Government has not yet formally appealed for support, it has said it welcomes in-kind contributions, UN spokesperson Michele Montas told reporters today. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is willing to release a grant from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), Ms. Montas added, and both Khalid Malik, the Resident Coordinator – who is based in Beijing – and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) – are submitting requests for funds to buy assistance items for victims and to strengthen coordination activities. UN agencies remain ready to provide ready-to-eat food, shelter materials, health, water and sanitation supplies and other items and OCHA has identified an especially urgent need for tents. More than 50,000 people may have died as a result of the quake, according to reports in Chinese state media, which measured about 7.9 on the Richter scale when it struck Sichuan province in the southwest of the country on Monday afternoon. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim have both expressed their sorrow and sympathies after learning of the tragedy and pledged the support of the UN. 15 May 2008The United Nations Resident Coordinator in China is in contact with the country’s authorities to offer UN tools and services to help in the rescue and recovery efforts following Monday’s deadly earthquake. read more
The cutting-edge technology was first introduced by the World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in February in Jordan’s King Abdullah Park refugee camp and was expanded to Azraq refugee camp in April, with an eye towards expanding to refugees outside of camps, according to a news release from WFP. Now I don’t have to worry if I forgot my card at home or if I misplaced it.“The iris scan payment system has been extremely successful, and we are thrilled that WFP and its partners are now able to serve Syrian refugees living in Jordan’s largest camp through this innovative system,” said WFP Country Director Mageed Yahia. “Iris scan technology has reshaped the shopping experience for Syrian refugees in Jordan, making it easier and more secure for them, while also enhancing accountability,” he added. For the first time in the history of humanitarian assistance, a WFP beneficiary received food assistance in the blink of an eye. “Now I don’t have to worry if I forgot my card at home or if I misplaced it. Whenever I’m near the shop, I can just walk in and get whatever food that’s missing from home,” said Hana Heraaki, a Za’atari resident.WFP’s system relies on UNHCR biometric registration data of refugees. The system is powered by IrisGuard, the company that developed the iris scan platform, Jordan Ahli Bank and its counterpart Middle East Payment Services.Once a shopper has their iris scanned, the system automatically communicates with UNHCR’s registration database to confirm the identity of the refugee, checks the account balance with the financial services firms and then confirms the purchase and prints out a receipt – all within seconds.Through the iris scan and electronic voucher programme, WFP supports more than half a million Syrian refugees in Jordan. read more

We are fast approaching an age where buying games will be a completely digital affair. But if you grew up with the NES, Master System, or any of the Nintendo, Sega, and Sony systems to date, you know each has its classics that are, in some cases, worth a small fortune in their disc or cartridge format. If you’re a collector, counting the complete back catalog of games for one system as part of your collection is a commendable achievement, but what about having full gaming sets for 22 different systems?I doubt anyone has ever done that through game purchases alone, but one eBay seller is offering such a set. The price? A cool $1.2 million. That’s a crazy amount of cash to spend on games, but when you find out what’s included in this auction, and the condition the games are in, it might actually sound like a good deal. The seller is called collectors_king, and he’s either got great connections in the games manufacturing industry, or he stumbled across an abandoned storage factory that just so happened to have the ultimate collection of games within. Here’s the list of systems the auction is offering full game sets for along with the number of games for each one:Nintendo Famicon – 1,050 gamesNintendo Famicon Disk – 200 gamesNintendo Virtual Boy – 19 gamesNintendo Super Famicon – 1,500 gamesNintendo 64 – 200 gamesNintendo DD64 – 10 gamesNintendo Gamecube – 320 gamesSega Master System (Europe) – 300 gamesSega Mark 3 & Master System (Japan) – 80 gamesSega Game Gear – 200 gamesSega Megadrive – 450 gamesSega 32 X – 19 gamesSega Mega CD – 115 gamesSega Saturn – 1,150 gamesSega Dreamcast – 550 gamesPC Engine Hucard – 300 gamesPC Engine Supergrafx – 6 gamesPC Engine CD – 120 gamesPC Engine Super CD – 300 gamesPC Engine Arcade CD – 12 gamesPC-FX – total games not statedPioneer Laseractive – total games not listedIf you visit the eBay page via the link below it lists every single game being offered for each system. Catholic School Bans ‘Harry Potter’ Books Because SpellsToy Tuesday: The Best Animal Toys Stay on target While we have all the Harry Potter books, along with seemingly endless films, the cataloging that comes along with dissecting this kind of world will never be complete. However, people are going to try. One of the more recent efforts is a handy chart that breaks down every spell cast. The chart, compiled and coded by Skyler Johnson in Python, picks apart all seven books and finds instances of spells. The visualization then maps out how often those spells were used when they were mentioned, and in what context. It also breaks down how many spells were used in each book. Besides, a sudden drop in The Half-Blood Prince, as Harry and his friends move up in years, so do the number of spells used. It would make sense that in the first year, when they know almost no spells, that the books wouldn’t mention any. However, as Johnson noted, the chart doesn’t take into account implied or non-verbal spells. It only takes into account when the spell was actually said out loud.So according to it, we can see that the spell most used in the stories was Accio, which is utilized to summon objects. Some of the spells, like Accio and Expelliarmus, are just easy and useful in a lot of situations. Other spells, including Expecto Patronum and some of the Unforgivable Curses, are used more for plot reasons.I remember starting a project like this in middle school when the books came out. I had this Harry Potter notepad and decided that the only thing I could write in it were the different spells used, how they were conducted. I can’t recall what the goal was, but I think it had something to do with wanting to get a head start for when I received my Hogwarts acceptance letter. I made it through the first two books before I abandoned the project. So basically, props to Johnson for the painstaking work. read more

Hands-On: Monster Energy Supercross is More Exciting Than Soft DrinksCosplay Gallery: New York Comic Con 2017, Part 2 These days it’s tough to get a read on what Marvel thinks about diversity in general and specifically characters like Black Panther. Obviously, they want to make the character, arguably their premier Black superhero, a big deal following his appearance in Captain America: Civil War and before his solo cinematic debut next year. He’s a new playable character in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. And his main book right now is still being written by public Black intellectual Ta-Nehisi Coates. However, the spin-off Wakanda books meant to capitalize on that buzz have since been canceled, and while two new spin-offs are on the way, we don’t know if they’ll keep up momentum after the movie has been released. Meanwhile, Marvel’s larger Legacy initiative seems to be about pivoting away from pushes for diversity and more toward a traditional status quo. After all, even though half-Black half-Puerto Rican Miles Morales has references in Spider-Man Homecoming, Spider-Man himself is still Peter Parker. At New York Comic Con, I attended a panel featuring a conversation between Coates and Jason Reynolds, author of a recent Miles Morales young adult novel. And it seems that while Marvel’s taste for provocative work may change with the season, these two are determined to get away with as much as they can.Coates said that although it may not seem obvious, he sees a clear throughline between his writing on race-related social issues in The Atlantic and his work writing comic books. He’s also been a comic fan since youth. “It’s where I got my literary sensibility.” But he had no desire to meet the creators. Your heroes always disappoint you.Reynolds meanwhile was more of a fan of comic book adjacent things like cartoons and toys. And it was only after being told the Spider-Man book Marvel wanted him to write was Miles, not Peter, did he consider joining the project. It was a character he felt he had something to say about.“There’s a hunger among Black comic book fans to see Black characters bust some ass,” said Coates. “It’s a power fantasy white folks get all the time.”But for Coates and Reynolds, working with Black Panther and Spider-Man, respectively, also presented political narrative potential that would be irresponsible to refuse.Reynolds compared his take on Morales to a young athlete from a tough neighborhood who suddenly becomes very wealthy. Kids like that who get power don’t immediately think about responsibility. However, as Reynolds recounts from his own life experience that he put in the book, people who get out of situations like that can also have a kind of survivor’s guilt that’s very much in line with Spider-Man stories. “Spidey Sense” in the hood is just how you keep on living.Coates is very much aware that his famous name is largely responsible for him getting the Black Panther gig. That’s why he’s working hard to make sure he’s more than just a name. It’s caused some challenges, like adapting his prose-heavy style for the more visually oriented comic book medium, but after I read his first major story arc I’d say he succeeded at his lofty goal of exploring the national psyche of a post-invasion Wakanda.Marvel and Disney, for the most part, have been good about letting these authors do what they want. And that trust is a two-way street. The writers respect the larger continuity, picking the pieces they want, and honor storytelling norms of comics, or in Reynolds’s case, honor those norms as much as possible in a non-graphic novel. Coates, in particular, loves how comics in the middle of a storyline don’t necessarily give background context for current events because that’s how life works. But when a hugely important character in the Marvel universe is named Captain America and wears a flag (before turning into a Nazi is a major crossover event) being apolitical is just impossible. Black. Panther.Reynolds recalled a meeting at Disney over champagne shortly after getting the Miles Morales gig where he improvised some early ideas for the story. He knew his history of writing about young boys of color made him a great fit for the character. But he also wanted to use the story to show mistreatment of minority youth in school and the school to prison pipeline. Fortunately, instead of telling him to downplay the charged contemporary themes like he feared, Disney encouraged him to push them further. But for all of their grappling with real-world issues, comic books ultimately aren’t the real world. They’re escapist. And as they get bigger, as evidenced by the gigantic crowds at events like Comic Con, Coates expressed concern that they may distract people from engaging with the real world and its real consequences. The Avengers movies keep earning more money while voter turnout is lower. That’s why political comic characters like Black Panther and Miles Morales, and political comic book writers like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Jason Reynolds are so important. If the kids (and adults) are going to invest this much in something fake, we have to tell them some truth.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Stay on target read more
A Columbus crab living on a loggerhead sea turtle. Credit: BMC Ecology 2013, 13:6 doi:10.1186/1472-6785-13-6/CC BY 2.0 P. minutus is a type of tiny (half-inch long) pelagic crab that lives in the open ocean—it is notable because it makes its home on things that float, such as logs, weeds and even the hulls of ships. In this new effort, the researches focused on those crabs that lived either on floating plastic debris ‘islands’ or in the small space below the tail of loggerhead turtles and its shell—a space just large enough for two of the crabs to live—one male and one female. The researchers sought to test a biology theory that suggests that larger groups of refuge-dwelling animals should be more inclusive than those that are smaller and thus more exclusive. To that end, they conducted a survey of the oceanic crabs by sailing out onto the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (a vortex where plastic trash tends to congregate) and corralling floating items and then snatching the crabs that were living on them—each specimen was preserved in ethanol and then catalogued. As part of the analysis, they noted that the size of a given turtle did not matter, other than it was big enough to serve as a host—only two crabs ever paired up and used the turtle’s back-end as a home. This suggested that it was not the size of the turtle that mattered but the size of the refuge it offered. In this case, the crabs all lived a monogamous lifestyle. They found the same thing when looking at crabs living on small patches of barnacles. In sharp contrast, they noted that crabs that lived on larger refuge sites such as floating plastic, gave up the monogamous lifestyle, opting instead to play the field. This, the team suggests, was likely mostly due to the inability to defend an open space against interlopers. These differences, the researchers note, indicates an adaptation by the crabs—one that fit neatly with the theory they were seeking to bolster—that the crabs did become more exclusive as their group became smaller. More information: Joseph B. Pfaller et al. Sea turtle symbiosis facilitates social monogamy in oceanic crabs via refuge size, Biology Letters (2016). DOI: 10.1098/rsbl.2016.0607 AbstractThe capacity for resource monopolization by individuals often dictates the size and composition of animal groups, and ultimately, the adoption of mating strategies. For refuge-dwelling animals, the ability (or inability) of individuals to monopolize refuges should depend on the relative size of the refuge. In theory, groups should be larger and more inclusive when refuges are large, and smaller and more exclusive when refuges are small, regardless of refuge type. We test this prediction by comparing the size and composition of groups of oceanic crabs (Planes minutus) living on plastic flotsam and loggerhead sea turtles. We found that (i) surface area of refuges (barnacle colonies on flotsam and supracaudal space on turtles) is a better predictor of crab number than total surface area and (ii) flotsam and turtles with similar refuge surface area host a similar number (1–2) and composition (adult male–female pairs) of crabs. These results indicate that group size and composition of refuge-dwelling animals are modulated by refuge size and the capacity for refuge monopolization. Moreover, these results suggest that sea turtle symbiosis facilitates social monogamy in oceanic crabs, providing insights into how symbiosis can promote specific mating strategies. Italian group claims to debunk Shroud of Turin (Update) © 2018 Phys.org A pair of Italian researchers, one a forensic anthropologist, the other a chemist, has conducted tests to determine the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin and report that their analysis indicates that the shroud is a forgery. In their paper published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, Matteo Borrini and Luigi Garlaschelli describe the tests they conducted and what they found. A separate paper published last year has been retracted; it was originally published on the open access site PLOS One by another team claiming to have found evidence of trauma to the body of the person seen on the shroud. In this new effort, Borrini and Garlaschelli tested the authenticity of the shroud by carrying out experiments with fake and real blood and cloth simulating the shroud. Their goal was to find out if blood stains on the shroud were consistent with each other and with reports from the Bible. One of the experiments involved applying blood to the body of a live volunteer (who was lying in a pose reminiscent of the person seen on the shroud) and then wrapping him in linen to see what sorts of stains it would leave. They also noted that the Bible reported that Jesus had been stabbed in the side with a spear—to mimic such a wound, the researchers attached a sponge to a wooden stake, soaked it with blood and then used it as a spear to impale a mannequin. The researchers report that the bloodstains on the shroud are inconsistent—blood flowing in rivulets would not have formed stains in the ways observed on the shroud. As one example, they point out that blood flowing from a wound to the hand could only have made the stains seen on the shroud if the person were standing upright—the Bible reports that the body of Christ was put in the shroud after death. They conclude by claiming that it would have been impossible for the blood stains on the shroud to have originated in the way the Bible describes; therefore, they say the shroud is a forgery.Meanwhile, a paper published by a team last year detailing a study of the shroud (and claiming to have found evidence of trauma in the victim) has been retracted by the publishers of PLOS One—the editors note in their retraction that concerns have been raised about the quality of the data used by the researchers and the conclusions they drew. November 18, 2009 – Utilizing newer cardiac computed tomography (CT) machines to find plaque and blockages in the coronary arteries led to better survival among those undergoing the test, according to a study presented Sunday at the American Heart Association Meeting in Orlando, Fla. Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) president-elect, Matthew J. Budoff, M.D., is the study’s lead author and a researcher at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed). Dr. Budoff said previous studies had found assessing heart disease using CT heart scans could predict overall death risks in most American adults, but did not look at whether the knowledge gained by undergoing the test led to better outcomes. In the study of 4,224 patients, 60 percent underwent the CT angiography (CTA) and 40 percent did not. Both groups were followed for almost seven years, and then all-cause mortality was assessed. Cardiac patients who did not undergo CTA were almost four-fold more likely to die during follow-up.“This study indicates that cardiac CT scans can provide patients and physicians an earlier and more accurate evaluation of their coronary arteries than traditional tests,” said Dr. Budoff. “The advanced knowledge clearly allows more aggressive and better treatments to be provided. Previous studies found cardiac CT scans encourage compliance with medications and lifestyles that are protective for coronary health, and to be more accurate than stress tests. This new, large study now shows that outcomes are improved with this knowledge.”In total, 270 deaths were recorded over 80 months of follow-up. The death rate was significantly lower in the group undergoing the CT angiogram (n=86) as compared to the standard of care group (n=184).“This study provides significant validation of cardiac CT scans,” said Dr. Budoff. “Improved compliance with therapies, more accurate assessment of risk, and identification of coronary stenosis provide important information in assessing a patient’s overall death risk. With this information, physicians can advise patients on diet, medications, exercise and other lifestyle changes that will help them avoid the risk of heart attack, strokes and other health problems.”“This is a most important study conducted by Dr. Budoff and echoes the sentiment of the SCCT, which espouses that cardiac CT angiography is the most accurate and noninvasive diagnostic imaging test for the detection of coronary artery disease,” said Dr. Jack Ziffer, Ph.D., M.D., FSCCT chief of radiology at Baptist Hospital and SCCT president.
