APTN National NewsThe streets of Montreal are no stranger to protests and Friday was no exception.A protest in front of Hydro Quebec kicked off a series of rallies, continuing throughout the weekend, in opposition to development on Aboriginal lands in Quebec’s north.APTN National News reporter Ossie Michelin was at the protest and brings this report.
The UN Forum on Forests, representing the world’s countries, agreed at a meeting at UN Headquarters in New York to establish two initiatives that it says will particularly help poor countries in need of assistance. An intergovernmental process is being set up to conduct in-depth analysis of all forms of forest financing over the next four years and a separate process will help countries mobilize funding so they can protect their forests.More than 1.6 billion people across the globe are estimated to be dependent on forests for subsistence living or employment, according to the World Bank, and trade in forest products is thought to represent almost 4 per cent of global trade in all commodities. But as many as 13 million hectares are lost each year because of deforestation, threatening biodiversity and reducing the protection offered by forests against the ravages of greenhouse gas emissions.Jan McAlpine, Director of the Secretariat of the UN Forum on Forests, said the new initiatives – the result of negotiations that date back to the landmark Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 – will lead to innovative solutions because they will bring together the broadest possible cross-section, including governments, donors and the private sector.“We must learn together, so that we may work together,” Ms. McAlpine said. 30 October 2009United Nations Member States today reached an agreement that sets out the path to financing sustainable forest management, ending nearly two decades of debate on an issue that is becoming more and more critical because of the impact of climate change. read more
“If responsible tourism is to become a tangible reality in our world, it is essential that the private sector, like their counterparts in public institutions, embrace the principles of ethical, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai, according to a press release released by the agency today.“Today, these companies have underscored their dedication to corporate social responsibility, to support the protection and empowerment of vulnerable groups, consumers and humanity’s heritage, to champion gender equality, poverty reduction, accessibility, cultural and environmental sustainability, and to facilitate access to decent employment across the globe,” he said. The commitment was made last week during the first International Congress on Ethics and Tourism which brought together more than 450 high-profile tourism officials, business leaders, international organizations and experts in Madrid, Spain, to discuss how to guarantee sustainable tourism as well as its role in poverty reduction, gender equality, and fighting exploitation in both the public and private sectors, among other topics.“Today’s show of private sector commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism from some of Spain’s most important tourism companies is an important step towards a more ethical tourism sector and one other businesses will surely follow,” said Prince Felipe of Asturias, who was present at the closing ceremony of the congress.Among the companies to sign up for the code were the Spanish Federation of Tour Agents’ Associations, as well as several Hotel Federations for various regions in the country, such as the Balearic Islands. The majority of the companies also signed the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism, committing themselves to concrete measures to protect children. The code was founded by ECPAT International, a global network for the elimination of child prostitution, child pornography and child trafficking for sexual purposes, and is funded by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and supported by UNWTO.This commitment comes just ahead of World Tourism Day, whose theme this year is ‘Tourism – Linking Cultures.’ Mr. Rifai had previously highlighted this as an opportunity for tourism to contribute to the aims of the UN Alliance of Civilizations, an initiative launched in 2005 by Spain and Turkey under UN auspices to promote better cross-cultural relations worldwide. World Tourism Day will be celebrated on 27 September. 19 September 2011Fourteen prominent Spanish tourism businesses have signed up to follow the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, a set of principles backed by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and designed to guide the development of the industry in ways that maximize socio-economic benefits and minimize negative impacts. read more
“I am confident that more information about the drone programme can safely be put into the public domain,” the Special Rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism, Ben Emmerson, said in a news release, noting that some important questions remain unanswered. “I will be engaging with the Administration over the coming months in an effort to further narrow the transparency gap. I very much hope that this engagement will bear fruit, and I will be reporting the results of the process in due course to the UN General Assembly.”During his speech at the National Defense University last month, Mr. Obama said that, as part of a realignment of US counter-terrorism policy, he would curtail the use of drones, recommit to closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and seek new limits on his own war power.Mr. Emmerson said that speech is “a critical document” mapping out the parameters of US counter-terrorism policy going forward, and is to be welcomed as “a significant step towards greater transparency and accountability.”He urged bi-partisan support for the President’s stated objectives – an end to the military conflict with Al Qaida and its associates, the closure of Guantánamo, and the development of an active strategy to address the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism – saying that they are far too important for global peace and security, as well as for the safety of American citizens, to be allowed to become “a political football” in Congressional politics. As for the use of targeted killing by drones, Mr. Emmerson said the speech sets out more clearly and more authoritatively than ever before the Administration’s legal justifications for targeted killing, and the constraints that it operates under. It also clarifies, and proposes improvements to, the procedures for independent oversight; and it disposes of a number of myths, including the suggestion that the US is entitled to regard all military-aged males as combatants, and therefore as legitimate targets. “But important questions remained unanswered,” the expert said. “On a close reading of the text of the speech and of the guidelines, some key questions remain obscure.” During his visit to the US capital, the Special Rapporteur held meetings with, among others, senior lawyers at the Department of State, the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the President’s National Security Staff. In addition to his meetings, Mr. Emmerson took part in a high-level round-table discussion on the US drone and targeted killing strategy, organized by the Council on Foreign Relations, and also took part in the Global Security Forum, organized by Fordham Law School’s Centre on National Security and the New America Foundation. The Board of Directors of the American Soybean Association (ASA) this week approved a resolution expressing strong support of the Doha World Trade Organization (WTO) Round’s Agriculture Declaration to achieve substantial improvements in market access, the phase-out and elimination of export subsidies, and substantial reductions in trade-distorting domestic support. The trade talks were launched in November 2001, in Doha, Qatar.”ASA is urging U.S. trade negotiators to pursue a comprehensive agreement that will level the playing field for U.S. farmers and ranchers,” said ASA President Dwain Ford, a soybean producer from Kinmundy, Ill.ASA is calling for an agreement that would:Substantially improve market access by using a harmonized approach that would cut higher tariffs by a greater amount, thereby resulting in more equitable levels of tariffs worldwide. United States agricultural tariffs average only 12 percent while agricultural tariffs in the rest of the world average 62 percent. The Doha Round must provide greater market access and level the international playing field for U.S. farmers and ranchers.Eliminate export subsidies within a transition period.Substantially reduce trade-distorting domestic support through a harmonized approach that would require countries to reduce non-exempt, trade-distorting support to a common fixed percentage of the value of their agricultural production. Trade-distorting subsidies to farmers in Europe and some other countries are extremely high relative to their value of agricultural production, and a final Doha agreement must level the playing field for U.S. farmers and ranchers. The ability of the United States to support U.S. agriculture through policies that are not trade distorting must be maintained.”The prosperity of U.S. soybean growers is tied to continued worldwide income and demand growth that can be spurred by trade liberalization and market access gains,” Ford said. read more

The quality of the bodypaints being offered to artists today has opened up the possibilities for hiding people in art. It’s also gone a long way towards helping cosplayers look like realistic versions of the characters they are playing. The master of bodypainting, though, has to be Johannes Stötter, who has successfully recreated animals that animate using human subjects, bodypaint, shading, and a scene-perfecting background. He’s created a tropical frog, a parrot, a chameleon, and even an angelfish, but it’s his latest bodypainting project that’s arguably his best yet. It’s a howling wolf, and it may take you a minute to realize this creation is made possible by careful painting and positioning of three women. Keep watching the video to see them break apart at the end.Johannes will plan and use as many human subjects as necessary to create a creature and allow it to move realistically. The tropical frog and chameleon require two people to work. The angelfish is impressive because he managed it with just one person. He’s also capable of creating these bodypainting masterpieces as part of a live show. I’ll just link to the video of that as the content is a little NSFW, but well worth a watch when you’re in a position to do so. read more

April 26, 2016 — Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed HB2601 into law, making the Oklahoma the 26th state to report a patient’s breast tissue composition through the mammography reporting results. Under the terms of the law, all healthcare facilities that perform mammography exams must include information that identifies the patient’s fibroglandular breast density according to the American College of Radiology’s Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS). If a patient is determined to have heterogeneously or extremely dense breast tissue, the legislation requires specific language explaining the health risks associated with dense breast tissue. Patients may also be directed to further informational resources from the ACR, American Cancer Society or Mammography Saves Lives. The law will become effective in November 2016.“This is an important day for women’s breast health in Oklahoma,” reported Rep. Mike Ritze, a physician and surgeon, who championed the density reporting legislation. “The legislation will standardize the communication of breast tissue density across the state to promote further dialog with healthcare providers about a woman’s personalized breast screening.”For more information: www.areyoudenseadvocacy.org FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 Technology | Mammography Reporting Software | July 25, 2019 Hologic Partners With MagView to Develop Unifi EQUIP Solution Hologic announced a partnership with mammography information solutions provider MagView to develop Unifi EQUIP, an… read more News | PACS | August 09, 2019 Lake Medical Imaging Selects Infinitt for Multi-site RIS/PACS Infinitt North America will be implementing Infinitt RIS (radiology information system)/PACS (picture archiving and… read more read more News | Artificial Intelligence | August 13, 2019 Artificial Intelligence Could Yield More Accurate Breast Cancer Diagnoses University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that… read more News | Mammography Reporting Software | July 26, 2019 Ikonopedia Releases Automated Combined Reporting Package at AHRA Ikonopedia showcased its recently released Automated Combined Reporting package and its entire suite of structured… read more Feature | Artificial Intelligence | July 19, 2019 | Michal Chorev AI Models Predict Breast Cancer With Radiologist-level Accuracy Breast cancer is the global leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, and the most commonly diagnosed cancer… read more News | Breast Density | April 26, 2016 Oklahoma Governor Passes Breast Density Reporting Bill Oklahoma becoems 26th state to have breast density inform legislation on the books Technology | Artificial Intelligence | July 18, 2019 Paragon Biosciences Launches Qlarity Imaging to Advance FDA-cleared AI Breast Cancer Diagnosis System Paragon Biosciences LLC announced the launch of its seventh portfolio company, Qlarity Imaging LLC, which was founded… read more News | Mammography | August 14, 2019 Imago Systems Announces Collaboration With Mayo Clinic for Breast Imaging Image visualization company Imago Systems announced it has signed a know-how license with Mayo Clinic.
